We booked them a few times throughout the 90's. Both Ian and Frank are really nice guys. I performed with them in Canada at WEMF...it was legendary. Ian busted out some device, linked it to a synth and started waving his arms in front of it. I swear I witnessed colors shooting from his hands!!! (of course, i was on mescaline) ;)

Anyway...they are incredible...the real deal cyclonic spinners of psychedelic future funk. I've been off the psy-trance tip for years now...BUT...I always take a spin on the KoxBox colorwheel.

I personally believe that dj set is much more effective.. and by effective i meen its dancable and tranceable..... live set is for the show and big $$only! one can never produce a comlext and triggering sounds with only both hande this music made its way by high level of mixing and producing.... the set by franky was not live... unless you consider mixing as live music.
one more thing! where in Portugal did you listen to Kox.box set Chicc?

i recently drove to toronto determined to see koxbox play live as advertised by the blacklightactivists.. well, tsk tsk it seems the activists either didnt pay franke enough or misrepresented their party to the online community, which happens a lot.. i never saw an actual party flyer so for all i know it could have simply said KOXBOX DJ SET. not live. naturally i was disappointed after wading through a 5 hour koxbox dj set of a non mixed set track after track of frank pressing play. i guess they didnt pay him enough to play a GREAT dj set.. again.. i was there to see him play live.

Didn't you notice the blacklights failing throughout the night? The venue wasn't able to supply enough power, so Frank'E himself decided to forego the live set in favour of a DJ set, because of this very issue. Money isn't the issue - a bad venue is. No one could blame BLA for that either - there just hasn't been a full-scale psychedelic event in that space before, and it turns out they dont have the power for it. Unfortunate but what can you do?

ya i did notice the power going out and blacklites going down ect. ect... they had a little too much sound in there... i went to a boshke beats party there about a month ago and they had like half the sound w/ no problems.. cept the sound clapping off the back walls.

bring a generator / test the sound *before* the party

Everything -was- tested before the event... and the boshke beats party you speak of was the most boring and minimal setup I've seen for a party in years. Bad example!

Your expectations were misplaced in regards to the boshke beat party being that it was a minimal TECHNO event.. not a psytrance party .

Even a good minimal techno jam transforms the space. Saying that you're going for that run-down warehouse look in a run-down warehouse is a conceptual cop out.

So live or Dj? What the best set to catch?
